Problems and Methods of Blood
Glucose Control Systems Automation
|
K.V. POZHAR
The task of automation of blood glucose control systems for people with type 1 diabetes are complicated by the high-inertia and
nonlinearity of the control object, as well as the presence of complex residual natural mechanisms of internal regulation. The automation
methods being developed are aimed at reducing user participation in the control loop. Feedback-based methods are considered, including PID
controllers, which do not provide sufficient response rate. The most promising remains a combination of predictive control with feedbackbased methods, where increased regulation rate is achieved by implementing a control action before the onset of disturbance, and feedback
can compensate for the accumulating prediction error. These methods depend on the accuracy and completeness of mathematical models, the
improvement of which remains topical. Also, one of the significant problems in the fi eld of control methods development is the lack of unifi ed
methods for assessing their effectiveness. The paper considers effectiveness metrics that cover various medical and technical aspects of blood
glucose control. The most indicative are the LBGI and HBGI metrics based on the Kovatchev risk function, but a comprehensive assessment
of the effect of management requires the use of a set of metrics. A promising tool for testing management algorithms as opposed to clinical
tests is the T1DMS simulator, testing management algorithms on which would allow comparing the efficiency of management using the same
metrics on the same virtual patients.
