Model-Based Optimization
of Feedstock Allocation
in a Multicomponent Distillation Column |

The article addresses the optimization problem of redistributing the feedstock flow to the feed trays of a distillation column when the
composition of the initial mixture changes, aiming to enhance the separation efficiency of a multicomponent mixture in ethylbenzene
production. The optimization problem is solved using the criterion of minimizing the loss of key separation components, employing a
mathematical model based on the column’s material balance equations, contact stage equations, and vapor-liquid equilibrium equations. An
optimization algorithm for control parameters (refl ux flow rate, reboiler temperature) and feedstock redistribution among the feed trays is
proposed, utilizing a gradient-based method. It is demonstrated that optimal feedstock redistribution significantly minimizes the loss of key
components and stabilizes the process when the composition of the initial mixture varies.
