The article is devoted to the analysis of the method for calculating the elastic modules of structural layers of road pavements based on the
results of non-destructive testing using falling weight deflectometres. It has been established that using only information about the defl ection cup –
maximum movements of the sensitive elements of the defl ection sensors included in the installation – as input parameters for calculation does not
allow obtaining fully reliable results. Using mathematical modeling, it has been shown that with an absolute error in measuring displacements equal
to 5 μm, the difference between the maximum and minimum calculated elastic moduli for the same layers of road surface reaches up to 700%. To
increase the reliability of the calculation, it is proposed to supplement the input information with a relaxation coefficient, which characterizes the rate
at which the road surface returns to its equilibrium state after the loading impulse ceases to act. It was found that the proposed modification reduces
the standard deviations of the calculated elastic moduli of the layers by 2 to 5 times. At the end of the work, ways to further improve the calculation
method were proposed.
Keywords: multilayer road pavement, falling weight deflectometer, deflection bowl, back calculation of elastic moduli.
