Fuzzy Method of Increasing the Contrast of Remote Sensing Images |

Many traditional contrast enhancement techniques take a global approach to enhance the entire brightness level of an image. However, it is generally difficult to improve all land cover classes appearing in satellite imagery, as local contrast information and detail can be lost in dark and light areas. This study demonstrates a fuzzy image enhancement technique that breaks down the pixel values of an image into varying degrees of association to compensate for the loss of local luminance in dark and light areas. The method consists of three steps: First, the satellite image is converted from a black-and-white display luminance space to a membership space using c-Means fuzzy clustering. Second, the corresponding conversion model for each cluster is built on the basis of the corresponding membership. Third, the Image is converted back to the luminance space of the black and white image by merging the converted gray values for each cluster. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is assessed visually and quantitatively. The results obtained show that the proposed method can improve the quality of image visualization and improve the measurement of indicators.
