Prospects for automated cars to decrease transportation energy |
E.A. RAHIMOV
Transport energy use and carbon emissions continue to grow, but both need to be drastically reduced. Traditional proposed solutions, all of which have already been used to some extent, include switching to low-carbon vehicle fuels, significant improvements in vehicle fuel efficiency and modal shift. However, their impact was negligible. Instead, this article explores the extent to which fully automated vehicles can contribute to the environmental sustainability of global passenger transport. It has been found that fully automated vehicles lead either to an increase or, at best, to a slight reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore, at best, will have minimal use to reduce emissions in the ordinary world. Firstly, the reason for this conclusion is that their potentially lower costs of time and money can lead to increased travel by vehicles, which compensates for any increase in energy efficiency, and secondly, that they face serious problems that may delay or even prevent their widespread adoption.
Keywords: automated vehicles; global climate change; sustainable transport; decrease in transport energy.
